Singapore has one of the most successful public housing programmes in the world. More than 80% of its population lives in flats built by the Housing & Development Board (HDB), which is a statutory board. There are about 1 million HDB flats. The HDB flats typically range from 70 m2 to 130 m2, with 2 to 4 bedrooms.
The majority of HDB residents use traditional lightings such as tungsten bulbs or compact fluorescent lamps. A few HDB residents embarked on the green journey and switched to LED lamps, and in the process enjoyed great satisfaction and savings.

Lamps used
The HDB residents were either using B22 (lamp head)-40W tungsten lamps or B22-8Wcompact fluorescent lamps for their toilets. The toilets are about 1.5 m long, 1.0 m wide and 2.4 m high. The B22-40W tungsten bulb provided an illuminance of about 30 lux, while the B22-8W compact fluorescent lamp provided an illuminance of about 20 lux directly under the lamps respectively.
They switched to imag B22-3W LED lamps. To their great surprise and joy, their toilets were much brighter with an illuminance of about 50 lux.
Savings
Comparing the 40W tungsten lamp and 3W LED lamp, that is a savings of 37W. Assuming the HDB residents turn-on the lamps for four hours each day, that works out to be a savings of 37W x 4 hours x 365 days = 54,020 Wh or 54 kWh each year. Taking the electricity tariff as SGD0.25 per kwh, the electricity savings work out to be SGD13.50 per year.(or 37/40 =93%).
Conclusion
The HDB residents were very happy with the brightness of the imag B22-3W LED lamps. They were also very happy that they could save so much.
